How to Treat Headaches Naturally

There are many natural headache remedies available. Headache sufferers do not have to add insult to injury by incurring the negative side effects of prescription or over the counter medications. Prevention is the first option. If that doesn't work, alternative therapies such as acupuncture and herbal remedies may be effective in reducing or eliminating painful headaches.

The best way to treat headaches naturally is to keep them from happening in the first place. First, you must identify the cause of the headaches. Common causes include, but are not limited to: allergies/hay fever, eye strain, reactions to certain food, and stress. Determining the cause of your headaches requires basic trial and error. Start with the cause you think is most likely, and try to eliminiate it. If you cannot eliminate the cause, there are some alternative therapies available.

If you have noticed headaches occur within hours of consuming certain foods, try eliminating it for a while and see how you feel. This is not the same as a food allergy, just an adverse reaction. Though it may be an indicator of a new food allergy. Common offenders include, but are not limited to:

  • Chocolate
  • Peanuts
  • Onions
  • Shellfish

If headaches increase seasonally, it could be due to allergies. This is the time to take your allergy medication or homeopathic remedy consistently. If you work on a computer all day, try looking away at something else every hour or so.

During the process of identifying the cause of your headaches, you will still need to make them go away! Prescription and over the counter drugs have undesirable side effects. You may like to try natural headache remedies such as:

  • Acupuncture
  • Acupressure
  • Herbal remedies (Feverfew, Butter Burr, magnesium)
  • Meditation

Acupuncture is performed by a licensed practitioner. Special needles are placed on what is known as pressure points on the body. The interesting thing is, the needles are not placed on the site of the pain, such as the neck. Treatment can last any where from 20 minutes to a few hours. Multiple treatments may be necessary in order to experience complete relief.

Working at a computer for long hours may cause eye strain. Try to look away from your monitor a few times every hour.  Set a reminder or timer so that you won’t forget to take these important visual breaks throughout the day.

Acupressure does not have to be performed by a licensed practitioner. You can even perform the technique on yourself. Simply apply pressure to the appropriate pressure point for 20-30 seconds. A common pressure point to relieve headaches is the meaty area between the thumb and forefinger.

Herbal remedies, such as fever few, butter burr, and magnesium, work better at prevention than headache relief. People who are allergic to ragweed should not take butter burr supplements. Also, be sure the product you are taking is free of pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are harmful. Magnesium should be started at a low dose and gradually increased as it may cause stomach upset or diarrhea. These remedies are particulary helpful for preventing migraine headaches.

Meditation is especially helpful when stress is the cause of headaches. Meditation does not have to be some sort of intense spiritual experience. It can simply be taking the time to relax with deep breathing and focusing on something positive. When we are stressed, we tend to focus on negative thoughts and events happening in our lives. Deep breathing and focusing on things you are thankful for can counteract the negative effects of stress.
