Prana the Life Force of Ayurveda

Prana is considered in Ayurveda as the life-giving force. It is the equivalent term for the term Chi or Qi used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is the greatest energy in every living being. It is the force subjectively experience as the will to live. Prana is more associated with the sense of touch and sound than the other three. Feeding Prana into body and mind maintaining the body, mind and spirit, keeping the individual healthy on physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level.
The Sanskrit word “Prana” means “vital force”. It is the most important element of any life. Prana is considered in Ayurveda as the life-giving force. It is the equivalent term for the term Chi or Qi used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Prana is the greatest energy in every living being. It is the force subjectively experience as the will to live. It exists in each and every part of a living being. It means that Prana is distributed throughout the whole body. It is more concentrated in the brain, the heart and the colon. Elements of Prana Ayurvedic system is based on the five-element theory of nature. The five elements are: Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. Among these five elements Prana is more associated with Ether element, although it is also associated with Air element. Although Prana is everywhere in the body, it acts as a hidden force within the body that simultaneously engulfs everything outside the body. Prana with senses Prana is more associated with the sense of touch and sound than the other three. Touch(sparsha) and sound (shabda) feed the force of Prana. It is the indwelling force which we cannot see. It requires replenishment every day. Air and food feed Prana force into the body. They carry Prana energy into the body through Oxygen and blood. It travels through the channels of the body. Prana helps to create, circulate and stabilize the integrity of blood. How to maintain and increase Prana? The energy of Prana can be increased by Pranayama or conscious or intentional breath and by eating fresh foods. The yoga of Pranayama facilitates the absorption of Prana energy into the lungs and the blood stream. So also the herbal substances in fresh foods increase the body’s concentration of Prana. It can also be increased by applying the oils through massage therapy. Ayurveda says that exposure to balanced sounds also can feed Prana. Balanced sounds are found in nature, music, chanting mantra and saying prayers. Function of Prana in body and mind Without Prana there is no life. The body and mind will become dead. Prana is the superior force that governs the whole body and mind. It significantly influences the physical, mental and psychic aspects of the human brain. It is responsible for the mind-body coordination. It harmonizes all the parts of the physiological body and leads to awakening of the chakras or the psychic body. Through the awakening of chakras, Prana leads a person towards self realization. The holistic approach of Ayurveda enables to achieve an optimal health by energizing with Prana. Feeding Prana into body and mind maintaining the body, mind and spirit, keeping the individual healthy on physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level.
