What is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of hands on healing that uses energy called the Universal Life Force. It is taught in three levels and can benefit many ailments of mind, body and spirit.

Reiki is a form of hands on healing that uses energy called the Universal Life Force. Ki literally means life force. Those who practice Reiki believe that everything living has this life force. It does not require any form of religious belief as it is not a belief or religious system.

While Reiki is hands on, the client remains fully clothed, as the energy will pass through clothing. This energy works on the electrical system of the body, much like ultrasound, shaking the cells into action. Also much like ultrasound therapy, Reiki encourages the body to heal itself. Reiki heals on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level.

This form of complimentary medicine or alternative medicine is most beneficial to a number of health issues and complaints, from insomnia to speeding healing, easing stress to relieving pain, reducing asthma symptoms, boosting the body's immune system and a whole host of other issues. As it is a complimentary form of healing, no Reiki practitioner would suggest stopping conventional treatment, and indeed they will advise that you see your GP for many issues. Where conventional medicine treats the symptom, Reiki goes to the source of the issue.

While no Reiki practitioner would call Reiki a cure or a miracle, they would all happily confirm that it is a real form of healing that does produce results, from speeding up the mending of broken bones to alleviating arthritic pain, for example.

Different Kinds of Reiki

There are several different kinds of Reiki, many of whom are far more recent occurrences than others. One thing to note though is that Traditional Usui (and several other forms) Reiki teaches healing that encompasses people of all ages, animals and plants. I have made a point of saying this here as there have been a few ‘teachers’ out there who will do Traditional Usui Reiki courses, and then offer the same students Animal Reiki courses. The latter is redundant.

The Reiki Levels

There are three levels in Reiki, although some teachers split the Masters level into two classes; one for master level energy attunement and the other for teaching and the ability to pass on attunements. Not all Reiki practitioners wish to teach but do want master level energy to better help clients.

When a person is attuned, their body’s energy channels are opened and cleared of obstructions. They will be able to receive an increased level of Ki and become connected to the source of all universal Ki.

Reiki Level 1 is healing of self, primarily. Once attuned, the person can heal friends, family and pets/plants but are not ready yet to heal professionally. Self healing can take quite some time in many cases but can be a matter of weeks in others.

Attunement results in the energy of the attunee adjusting and increasing the new healer’s capacity to channel it. The body’s auras and chakras are cleansing. It is recommended for new attunees to perform a daily self-healing for the first 3-4 weeks.

Reiki Level 2 is primarily about healing others and distance healing. It is in Level 2 that the person will learn the main symbols used for healing. You learn more about the emotional and mental aspects that Reiki can benefit, as well as being introduced to the laws of karma.

Teachers vary in what they teach but generally in either Levels 1 and/or 2, the person will be given information on chakras and how to work with them, how to clear them and how the energy of each chakra relates to parts of the physical body. They may or may not be given information on auras and guides (Spirit and/or Angel guides). This depends on what the person being taught is willing to accept and what they are comfortable with.

How to protect the healer while healing is an essential part of Reiki 1. Kessho Reiki uses crystals, and cleansing the crystals is generally also taught when introducing the person to this aspect of healing.

Reiki Level 3 is the master level and the remaining symbols are taught to the attunee. Further information on chakras is often given, as well as how to pass attunements.

Reiki, whether you believe in its ability to heal or not, is a wonderful form of energy healing. While no one proclaims it to be a miracle cure, it will at the very least leave you feeling relaxed and positive and in the majority of cases a good night’s sleep follows a Reiki session. In an age where stress is rapidly becoming a serious health issue, Reiki is a form of complimentary therapy that has no nasty side effects.
